Understanding Water Heating Options...

After your furnace and air conditioning expenses, water heating is most homeowners' biggest energy expense.  It is said to account for up to 30% of the average home's energy budget.  When getting ready to choose a water heater, know your personal peak use and gallons per minute as well as the units FHR ( First Hour Rating-this tells you how much hot water the heater can deliver in an hour of use)

Based on national average fuel costs, gas heaters cost roughly half as much to run as electric models and can pay for their higher up front cost in as little as a year.

Storage Water Heaters; are the most common type of water heater, fueled by electricity, natural gas, propane, or oil, storage water heaters transfer heat from a burner or coil to water in an insulated tank.  New energy-efficient gas-fired storage water heaters are a good, cost-effective replacement option for your current water heater if you have a gas line in your house.

Demand/Instantaneous or Tankless Water Heaters;  are an up and coming option.  If you can access Consumer Reports I would recommend you read up on the cons and pros of this type of unit.  Up front costs are high, you often need to upgrade your electrical wiring service and/or your gas supply lines and meter.  Again-know what your hot water demands would be and what you want the unit to produce. (Consumer Reports issue:  October 2008).

Indirect Water Heater:  if you use a boiler to heat your home you may want to consider an indirect water heater.  These use your boiler as the heat source by circulating hot water from the boiler through a heat exchanger in a well-insulated water heater tank. In the less common furnace-based systems, water in a heat exchanger coil circulates through the furnace to be heated, then through the water storage tank. An indirect water heater is one of the best options because it eliminates the tremendous flue losses associated with gas-fired storage water heaters but without the hassles and extra costs of tankless gas water heaters. When used with a modern, high-efficiency boiler, these energy savings hold true even in the summer when your boiler isn't needed for heat.

Conserve Your Water and Save Money too

Know where your water usage is.  The largest water user in any household is the toilet, they can account for up to 27%  of a homes use with the shower using up to 17%.  The second highest user of water is the washing machine at approximately 22%.  It is estimated that around 14% of the water provided to most homes is lost through leaks.  Literally money and water down the drain.

Look for leaks in the toilet tank, they can't be seen or heard.  Use more efficient fixtures, replace the shower head with a low-flow type and a faucet with an aerator.  Use your appliances like the dishwsher and washing machine with full loads only.  If it is time to replace the appliance consider a newer, higher efficiency one-the energy and resources saved can pay for the upgrade in a relatively short period of time.  Turn off the water while brushing your teeth, take shorter showers, keep a filled pitcher of water in the fridge instead of letting the water run while waiting for the water to get to the desired temperature.
